Vanessa Mangar

What do you teach?
I teach English and math but occasionally science and geography depending on my students’ needs. I can also teach dance and drama.

Why did you become a teacher?
I became a teacher because I believe that every child is smart. My goal as a teacher is to highlight my students’ strengths and show them how they can use that to support their weaknesses. No child should ever feel insufficient or incapable as they all have potential. I also want to inspire my students to use their strengths to inflict positive changes in the world.

How would your students describe you?
My students would describe me as FUN, cool, energetic and a little competitive but also kind and caring.

What’s your favourite challenge to help students overcome?
My favourite challenge to help students overcome is the one they feel like they absolutely can’t do, even though they’ve tried time and time again. Long division seems to be a common one.

What’s your favourite way to spend an afternoon?
My favourite way to spend an afternoon is taking a dance class at The Underground and then relaxing afterwards by playing SuperSmash Bros. on my Nintendo switch or watching Netflix with friends. If I’m alone, I like to crack open a book.
