Essay Coach Programs

The Opinion Essay Program – 8 Hours

An opinion essay is usually the first type of essay that a student will write. No research is involved, and students can support their arguments with examples from their personal experiences. A typical opinion essay question might be “Should students wear uniforms?”

The Opinion Essay program is designed to help students with persuasive essays that require no research or reading. This program provides an excellent introduction to essay-writing for students with limited experience.

The Research Essay Program – 12 Hours

A research essay asks students to research a topic and create an argument based on their findings. Students must quote or paraphrase their sources and include accurate citations and References/Works Cited lists. A typical research essay question might be “How did physical geography affect the lives of ancient Egyptians?”

The Research Essay program is designed to help students with all essays requiring the use of primary and/or secondary sources. In addition to teaching the foundations of essay-writing, this program provides an in-depth investigation of research skills, paraphrasing, and citation styles.

The Literary Essay Program – 12 Hours

A literary essay asks students to read one or more literary texts and analyze them by looking closely at the use of literary devices and themes. Students must draw conclusions about the ideas discussed in the text(s), and prove their arguments with quotations and examples. A typical literary essay question might be, “What does Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet suggest about the power of fate?”

The Literary Essay program is designed to help students with persuasive essays written in response to one or more literary texts. In addition to teaching the foundations of essay-writing, this program provides an in-depth investigation of critical reading skills, literary analysis, quotation integration, and citation styles.

Note: Students writing literary essays that also require secondary sources may choose to add additional lessons from the Research Essay program.

The Application Essay Program – 5 Hours

An application essay is written to obtain entrance to a post-secondary education program. Students respond to essay prompts provided by the post-secondary programs they are applying to. A typical application essay question might be, “Describe an experience which required you to overcome adversity. What did you learn?”

The Application Essay program is designed to help students applying to post-secondary, graduate, or professional programs.
