reading skills - the Cornerstone of Learning

Language is a powerful tool of communication. It allows us to access knowledge of the world around us, develop our own knowledge, and share ideas with others.

The ability to read opens up a whole new world of communication. Strong readers exhibit self-confidence and are able to fully participate in the world around them.

Current research on reading acquisition points to the development of phonological and phonemic awareness as strong predictors of reading success.

The more phonological awareness a child has, the easier it will be for her to learn to read. Which means that she will have a solid foundation to work from.

Phonological awareness is the ability to recognize different sounds in spoken words

Children who do well on phonological awareness tests become better readers.

Many children acquire the phonological skills that help them learn to read and – just as important – understand what they read, as easily as they learn to walk, talk, and tie their shoe laces.
When dyslexia or one of a number of other reading difficulties prevents a student from naturally acquiring these skills, learning on all levels become a challenge. Addressing and remedying a reading issue is an urgent need.

Our program makes use of the research-based Reading Mastery®  and Wilson Language Training System®  programs to help students learn the phonological skills and phonemic awareness so critical to the development of their own personal reading mastery.

In addition, we create a reading development program customized for the student. This may include working with parents to support ongoing learning at home, as well as providing selected reading lists based on the student's evolving reading skills and personal interests.

Reading difficulties are usually identified in the early grades, and we are able to utilize elements of our early reading programs to work with the student.

When the reading issues occur in upper grades or even adults, we draw upon research-based programs to help the learner develop the skills they need for lifelong reading capability.

At the other end of the spectrum are students who are under-challenged by the reading opportunities presented in their regular school environment. We also offer enriched reading programs to help these students develop at a speed in keeping with their capabilities and interests.

Please contact Ruth to review the specific nature your child's (or your own) reading concerns so that we can develop an individualized solution.
